Uppingham School has over 640 11-18 year-old boys and sixth form girls. It is famous for its magnificent facilities, academic and musical excellence, and a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
It is primarily a boarding school, where the pupils live in 13 Boarding Houses: ten for boys and three for girls. Each house is therefore kept small, with the largest the home for 52 students. Pupils eat all their meals in their houses. Thus the husband and wife teams who run the houses look after what is in very real terms an extended family. In addition, each boy and girl is pastorally served by a Tutor, all members of staff being attached to one of the Houses, and an individual student. The pastoral aspect of life a Uppingham is taken very seriously, and the school has trained counselling back-up. There is a fully-equipped Sanatorium, permanently manned by fully-qualified staff.
Being boarding, the School is a seven-day a week School, and this is why there is such a wide range of extra-curricular activities. There is a long tradition of outstanding Musical achievement: a large number of musical scholarships are awarded, and the School's reputation in this field is pre-eminent. There is a fully-equipped 350-seat theatre, run by the boys and girls under the direction of a Director of Drama; the School was also among the pioneers of Art, Design and Technology education and now boasts the award-winning Leonardo Centre of ADT, designed by Piers Gough. Uppingham is blessed with magnificent games fields (natural and synthetic) over 20 all-weather tennis courts and a Sports Centre where activities range from SCUBA diving to step-aerobics.
Over 95% of leavers proceed to degree courses, 20 generally going to Oxbridge. 96% of this year's GCSE candidates achieved five passes or more. Uppingham does not prevent weaker candidates from taking public exams for 'League Table' reasons.
Uppingham School is situated in a beautiful market town, on the A47 between Peterborough and Leicester. It lies midway between the A1 and M1. It is served by Oakham, Kettering and Peterborough stations, and Kettering is 50 minutes from London.
